A Visit to the Big House tells the story of the first time Rose and her little brother, Willy, go with their mother to visit their father in prison. It focuses on children's feelings, the love between parents and children, and the difference between right and wrong. The book is the result of a public/private partnership of Families in Crisis, Inc. and the Junior League of Hartford with the Connecticut State Department of Corrections. The Department of Corrections provided access to inmates for interviews and sponsored a contest within the prison system to find an illustrator for the book. (Author abstract modified)
