Employment services are an essential component of any program that works with low-income fathers. In this session, we will hear from practitioners who have used innovative approaches to help fathers increase their educational qualifications, sharpen their job skills, connect with employers, and enhance the economic stability of themselves and their families.

Preparation is essential for disclosing your disability. Effective disclosure requires that you discuss your needs and that you provide practical suggestions for reasonable job accommodations if they are needed. One way to become comfortable with discussing your disability is to find someone you trust and practice the disclosure discussion with that person. An NRFC team visited the Fathers and Families Center in Indianapolis on April 23 and 24, 2018. The team had the opportunity to talk with program staff, participants, graduates, and community partners. This NRFC Spotlight highlights aspects of the Fathers and Families Center work with fathers that may be of interest to other fatherhood practitioners, including Recruitment, Intake and Assessment, The Role of Partner Agencies, and Strong Fathers Classes.

The Infant Vitality Toolkit for Men and Fathers is a resource that can help involve men in the pregnancy process and educate them about their role in infant care. Whether fathers are looking for information on their own or in a group setting, this Toolkit provides valuable resources. It takes all of us--including fathers--to ensure that all babies see their first birthdays and beyond.

In fiscal year 2018, noncustodial parents were obligated to pay nearly $33.6 billion in current child support on behalf of the 15 million children served by the Title IV-D child support program. One-third of that, or $11 billion, was not collected. Unemployment is the leading reason for non-payment of child support by noncustodial parents. This brief will explore the opportunities at the state and federal levels to provide employment services to noncustodial parents and increase child support payments in the process.

This data snapshot provides information from published resources on a range of employment characteristics of resident fathers, including employment rates, employment status, earnings, family structure, and division of household labor.

These webinar slides: 1) Discuss challenges and assets of young fathers who may seek out employment services; 2) Describe research seeking new approaches to improve outcomes for low-income young fathers and children; 3) List four key strategies for engaging young fathers in programs that support expectant and parenting young families through workforce development and career readiness; and 4) Analyze approaches designed specifically to connect young fathers to employment opportunities. Roughly one in five people and more than one in 10 men between the ages of 18 and 44 in the United States live in rural communities. Although rural and urban fathers are similar in many ways, there are significant differences shaping their lives and opportunities that have implications for fatherhood programs. For instance, program staff working in rural communities often report that higher rates of unemployment, lower educational attainment, limited job opportunities, and lack of transportation translate to challenges that are difficult to address and unique to rural communities. The information is given from the perspective of a successful program participant who explains how UPNEXT helped him become updated on his child support, find and maintain a job, and regain custody of his daughter.
