This resource list is for fatherhood practitioners, fathers, clinicians, researchers, staf of health and human services agencies, and others who are interested in providing support for people with mental health or substance use challenges. The list was compiled based on presentations and discussions at the 2023 National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (NRFC) Virtual Event.

As a father, it’s vital that you understand how much your consistent presence and stable, nurturing involvement in your children’s lives bolsters all aspects of their development and their ability to flourish and excel in life. The focus of this information brief is on how fatherhood programs can work with fathers and their coparents to strengthen coparenting relationships and ensure that more children are able to beneft from a supportive parenting environmenment.

Domestic violence has been shown to have negative effects on fathers’ interactions and relationships with their children. Children exposed to domestic violence are at risk for psychological, social, and behavioral problems. Domestic violence can also affect fathers’ well-being, stability, and ability to parent.

Many service members report that the toughest part of being away from their kids is all the changes and “firsts” they miss—for example, first baby steps, first lost tooth, first base hit, first recital, first missed curfew. Unfortunately, there’s no substitute for experiencing any of these firsts. You can’t make up for all those lost hugs, kisses, and playtime. But staying in regular contact is a close second to physically being there.
