Coming out is an extremely emotional and often nerve-racking experience for those in the LGBTQ community. Youth within the LGBTQ community are at increased risk for physical and mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety, and drug and alcohol abuse. They are more likely to have physical and mental health outcomes on par with their straight and cisgender peers if they receive support from their families and communities. Research suggests children from non-White and Hispanic/Latinx communities are at higher risk for child maltreatment. This study identified states where children from specific non-White communities were overrepresented in child protective services reports for child physical, sexual, and emotional/psychological abuse. The authors found disparities for children from non-White communities in many states, especially for Black communities. Results from their exploratory mapping provide insight into how preventive resources might be differentially allocated to non-White communities.

Reports of racially discriminatory behaviors toward Asians in the United States have surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined self-reported racial discrimination toward Asians and Asian Americans living in the United States in relation to four health outcomes: anxiety, depression, physical symptoms and sleep difficulties. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in early childhood and developmental outcomes during the middle childhood and adolescent years have been understudied among low-income Black families. A nonresident parent is a person 15 years or older who does not reside for most nights in the same household as one or more of his or her biological, adopted, or stepchildren under age 21. Research finds that many nonresident parents and their children are economically vulnerable, and government policies often have substantial impacts on their lives. This study explored fathering among self-identified Native American men who also identified as fathers or father figures to children involved in the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project. The men reported that “being there” for their child was important. The article describes how the manifestation of being there ranged from traditional to contemporary models of fathering and concludes with a discussion of specific issues that are important for social workers and social service practitioners working with Native fathers.
