The purpose of this study was to fill a gap in our knowledge regarding father involvement in informal kinship care and its impact on the emotional and behavioral wellbeing of children in care. Although this study was neither exclusively a fatherhood nor a child welfare study, it has the potential to contribute to the knowledge base of each area. Housing tenure has typically been conceptualized as a dichotomous indicator of homeownership versus renting. This study expands that indicator to include families who are doubled up (living with others to share the cost of housing), an important private safety net for low-income families. Using longitudinal data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n=4,376), we examine the role of family structure and social support, socioeconomic status, health and wellbeing indicators, prior incarceration, and race/ethnicity on housing tenure for low-income urban fathers. “Daddy, There’s a Noise Outside,” takes the complex issue of protesting and breaks the conversation down so that a 1st grader can understand. The story begins when two children are awakened by noises in the middle of the night coming from outside the window of their inner-city neighborhood.
