This report provides a broad overview of key findings from the United States Sentencing Commission’s study of recidivism of federal offenders. The Commission studied offenders who were either released from federal prison after serving a sentence of imprisonment or placed on a term of probation in 2005. Nearly half (49.3%) of such offenders were rearrested within eight years for either a new crime or for some other violation of the condition of their probation or release conditions. This report discusses the Commission’s recidivism research project and provides many additional findings from…
Research shows that children and families do better when fathers are involved. Kids exhibit better school performance, increased self-esteem and improved relationships with peers, while parents feel less stress when they support each other and co-parent. This toolkit is based on a programmatic review of fatherhood involvement efforts in early childhood programs and is a collection of the many tangible steps a WIC site can take to become more inclusive of men and dads. Training Materials This guide is intended to guide fathers in meeting the emotional and financial needs of their children.
Numerous parents participate in parenting programmes to promote child development, but few programmes consider relationships within family systems. While both parents’ attendance can improve outcomes, both are rarely able to attend, with mothers typically being the participant. The study aims to understand whether changes to parenting practices can occur from one parent’s attendance and, if so, what factors promote the non-attending parent’s modified parenting practices. A mixed-method evaluation was conducted: semi-structured interviews, surveys and focus groups. In this study, both parents…

Little is known about community groups for young men who are fathers and young men can often feel marginalized in and from other services and family support settings. This report therefore details findings from a qualitative research project into two different projects which are providing groups for young men who are fathers. The research is based on interviews with stakeholders and participants within the two projects and this report looks at key themes and…

Training Materials The New Mexico Alliance for School-Based Health Care, as a contractor for the New Mexico Public Education Department, GRADS Plus grant, has created and collected a series of tools to increase the health literacy of young people who are pregnant/expectant and parenting. These tools may be useful directly for these young people or for adults who support them (e.g. teachers, health care providers, etc.). The goal of these documents is to assist in guiding young people as they navigate, for themselves and their children, the complicated U.S. health care system. These tools may be of use to any…
For people with low income, barriers such as unstable families, poor-quality education, lack of access to educational opportunities and jobs, and inability to meet basic food, health care, and housing needs can hamper upward economic mobility. Some low-income families and individuals can overcome these barriers, and their experience of poverty is transitory. For others, assistance from public or private sources can make the difference. This report provides a framework for thinking about the programs and initiatives that help individuals and families beat these odds and move out of poverty. We…
With a growing focus on the importance of men's reproductive health, including preconception health, the ways in which young men's knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs (KAB) predict their reproductive paths are understudied. Young men's KAB in adolescence predicts their future fatherhood and residency status. Strategies that address adolescent males' reproductive KAB are needed in the prevention of unintended reproductive consequences such as early and nonresident fatherhood. (Author abstract modified)
