In October 2019, FRPN released a Request for Proposal inviting states to apply for small planning grants to develop long-term plans to enhance father inclusion in state programs and policies. As part of our six-year effort to build research, practice, and policy in the fatherhood field, the FRPN developed a statewide planning initiative to support states in developing long-term plans to enhance father inclusion. This brief describes FRPN’s State Planning Grant Initiative and the activities that funded states pursued to begin the process of achieving systemic change aimed at father inclusion. It also describes the challenges they encountered, their early accomplishments, and the next steps that they plan to take.

During this webinar, hosted on July 22, 2020, we spoke with representatives of five fatherhood programs around the implementation of new virtual services to ensure continued program support for fathers and families. It featured a brief overview of each program, followed by an extended Q&A session with the presenters in video mode.

PRESENTERS:

An NRFC team visited the Fathers and Families Center in Indianapolis on April 23 and 24, 2018. The team had the opportunity to talk with program staff, participants, graduates, and community partners. This NRFC Spotlight highlights aspects of the Fathers and Families Center work with fathers that may be of interest to other fatherhood practitioners, including Recruitment, Intake and Assessment, The Role of Partner Agencies, and Strong Fathers Classes.

This webinar was a follow-up to our July 2019 webinar, The Importance of Co-Parenting and Relationship Skills: Helping Fathers Help Their Children. Presenters focused on tips for programs that work mainly with non-residential fathers, including a look at the role of stepfathers in a coparenting team. We were also joined by a father from the Fathers & Families Support Center who shared his coparenting story and offered tips for other fathers.

This National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (NRFC) spotlight on research provides a quick look at findings from Fatherhood and Coparenting (2020), a research report written by Armon R. Perry, Aaron Rollins, and Abby Perez.

A previous evaluation of 4 Your Child, a responsible fatherhood program in Louisville, Kentucky, indicated improvements in fathers’ parenting knowledge and conflict resolution skills. However, many of the fathers still reported co-parenting challenges.

Although much of the fatherhood work we hear about takes place in urban areas, we should not forget that many fathers and families live in rural areas or small town communities. This webinar explored the context of responsible fatherhood programming in rural areas and small communities, consider differences and similarities between rural and urban communities, look at strategies that some programs have used in working with dads in small communities, and reflect on general lessons for fatherhood programs in all communities.

To be a good teacher and role model for their children, fathers need a combination of parenting, relationship, and co-parenting skills. This webinar looked at ways in which responsible fatherhood programs are working to improve child well-being by helping fathers enhance their skills in those areas. Presenters discussed how the different skill sets intersect, described the work that their programs are doing with fathers, and offered tips for other fatherhood practitioners.
