Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a form of arthritis in children. Arthritis causes joint swelling and stiffness. In children aged 16 or younger, this form of arthritis affects one or more joints for at least 6 weeks. Unlike adult rheumatoid arthritis, which is ongoing and lasts a lifetime, children often outgrow JIA. However, the disease can affect bone development in a growing child. This article defines the different types of JIA, explains possible causes and symptoms, and discusses common treatments for the disease.
