Final Report of the African American Male Adoption Project.

This final report presents information on the outcomes and accomplishments of the African American Male Adoption Project, which used an innovative approach to find adoptive homes for African American boys in Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN. The report describes the accomplishments of the project, including the development of specialized and ongoing family recruitment strategies, such as announcing the project in church bulletins, airing radio public service announcements, providing materials at African American community events, and compiling photo albums of targeted children. Other activies reported include the development of promotional activities; the involvement of community members in the project; and the provision of training for project staff, professionals from participating county agencies, and community and church leaders. Additional accomplishments were the sponsorship of annual male adoption conferences, the development of the Rites of Passage program, and the establishment of a parent support group. The report also highlights project outcomes, barriers and deviations from the original plan, and the future direction of the project. Outcomes of the project include new culturally oriented adoption procedures and practice and the placement of 26 male children between September 1992 through March 31, 1994.
