The role of the father in child development is examined. Four different styles of fathering are described: the autocrat, the patriarch, the detached provider, and the expressive leader. The social determinants of a fathering style are marital stability, location in the informal social network, and availability of adequate fathering models. Each of these factors is examined to determine the ways in which professionals can effectively intervene to improve the general level of fathering. 5 references.
