2012 Community Care Ring Event – Giving our youth a fighting chance!
(Golden, CO) – Young people in Foster Care, as well as underprivileged and disadvantaged youth, living in the Denver Metro area and surrounding communities, are invited to attend the 2012 Community Care Ring Event. This will be a day of fun including amateur youth boxing, graffiti walls, face painting, a Cleo Parker Robinson dance showcase, and live music featuring national and local youth singers, rappers, dancers, and entertainers. The event will be held on June 2nd, starting at 1:00pm at Jefferson High School, 2305 Pierce Street in Edgewater. The live music begins at 6:30pm.
Young people in Foster Care are far more likely than their peers in the general population to endure homelessness, poverty, compromised health, unemployment, incarceration and other adversities after they leave the Foster Care system. Over 800,000 young people experience Foster Care every year, most without the appropriate resources, skills or options they will need to live independently, and most without connection to a positive adult. The funds raised from this event will be used to assist youth emancipating from the Foster Care system by providing housing, life skills, financial literacy training, and other support to become self sufficient.
Seven local boxing gyms will showcase their amateur youth boxers and there will be a special guest appearance by Chris Christmas, who will be presenting Foster Care participants with custom made rings from his jewelry line. Why boxing? Studies have shown that youth boxing programs can help children overcome the physical, economical, and social barriers that they normally encounter. There will be 12 to 15 bouts between 2:00pm and 6:00pm, and the winning boxers and gyms will receive watches and be featured in Vibe Magazine.
More on Chris Christmas – Chris Christmas plans to screen a short film he produced about youth in Foster Care. He is an advocate for youth in the Foster Care system and was once in the Foster Care system here in Colorado. The film can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp29QnBUIgY.
